How many of us can remember singing table prayers, hymns, and carols as a family, especially during the holiday season? Unfortunately, the tradition of singing together, be it around the dinner table or piano, seems to have been lost in most families. In an attempt to help your family regain this tradition, we are making available CDs, free of charge, that will contain many of the Christmas hymns and carols from the Lutheran Service Book. The carols were recorded in our sanctuary using the new grand piano, played in simple fashion from our hymnal, contain all the verses and are intended to be used to accompany singing. Of course, they can also be used for just listening, as well. The CDs will be available in the narthex (entrance area) of the church beginning Sunday, December 11. Please limit one per family.
You are invited to the Service of Lessons and Carols on Wednesday, December 14.
St. James will be offering another worship event this Advent/Christmas Season. A service of Lessons and Carols – a service format similar to the one made famous by the Choir of King’s College in Cambridge, England – will be held on December 14 at 7:00 PM. Nine readings, beginning with the story of The Fall in Genesis, continuing with Prophecy in the Old Testament, through to the Birth of Jesus in the Gospels, are interspersed with Advent and Christmas hymns. Music planned for this year includes “And the Glory of the Lord” from Handel’s Messiah, “Night of Silence/Silent Night,”“Good Christian Friends Rejoice,” “Lost in the Night,” and the hymns “Angels from the Realms of Glory,” “Once in Royal David’s City,” “Angels We Have Heard on High,” “Hark! The Herald Angels Sing,” and more. All of the adult choirs at St. James will participate. You are invited and encouraged to make this event part of your Advent/Christmas reflections and celebrations this year.
The school will once again be having their Christmas Bake Sale following the K-4th Grade Christmas Program on Sunday, December 18th and again on Wednesday, December 21st following the 7:00 PM Christmas Program by Grades 5-8.
Donations of homemade Christmas cookies, breads, candies or special items from our St. James Bakers would be appreciated. Please wrap items in Saran Wrap on a non-returnable plate or platter and label contents so purchasers know exactly what yummy treats they are purchasing. Volunteers to help price, set-up, sell and clean-up are needed. Please contact Laura Heuer 543-2589 or Julie Drusch 543-3275 for more information. Drop off information will be available in upcoming school and church bulletins.
